As the dust continues to settle on a presidential campaign defined by apathy, and Government parties continue to question where it all went wrong for them (and no I don’t believe it all comes down to poor judgment or poor candidates, although those things remain true), that Micheál Martin ever believed that Jim Gavin had some kind of star quality still leaves me bewildered. There’s a reason I think Catherine Connolly ran rings around her opponents. Connolly knows what she stands for and she’s unafraid to speak her truth. You may or may not agree with Connolly but she has an authenticity. She believes she’s right and so she can plainly state her case as such. Most left-wing politicians are like this – they generally believe themselves to be in the right and are forthright, often borderline sanctimonious when they state their position – but then again, at least they have one. Contrast this with Heather Humphreys who answered every question like a rabbit in the headlights. In the final debate, she couldn’t even say why she would make a good president or why people should vote for her.
