China Now Requires Influencers to Have Degrees

China Now Requires Influencers to Have Degrees China has introduced a new law requiring social media influencers to hold verified professional qualifications before posting on topics like medicine, law, education, and finance. The regulation, which went into effect Saturday, reportedly put up to 90% of influencers out of work by Sunday. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) says the move aims to curb misinformation online. Influencers must now prove expertise through recognised degrees, certifications, or licences, while platforms such as Douyin, Bilibili, and Weibo are tasked with verifying credentials, including clear citations, disclaimers, and transparency about sources. While the law targets disinformation, critics warn it could stifle free speech and limit who can share knowledge online. Influencers have become trusted voices on everything from investing to mental health, often because they are relatable rather than certified.
