China sharply criticised Israel during an urgent debate at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva on Tuesday. The session, held at the request of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), focused on Israel’s recent attack on Qatar.
Chen Xu, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, said Israel’s actions violate international law and the UN Charter. He stressed that the assault undermines Qatar’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security. According to Chen, the strike also jeopardises ongoing ceasefire talks in Gaza, where Qatar has played a central mediating role.
“Respect for sovereignty is a basic principle of international relations. Israel has ignored this repeatedly by launching operations against its neighbours,” Chen noted. He emphasised that China rejects the abuse of force and believes disputes cannot be solved through military aggression.
China urged Israel and other relevant parties to stop hostilities immediately and return to negotiations. In addition, Chen highlighted that international humanitarian and human rights laws demand the protection of civilians, including those in neighbouring states.
Beijing also reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate with the international community. It called for constructive diplomacy as the only viable path to peace in the Middle East. By condemning Israel at the UNHRC over the Qatar attack, China underlined its firm stance in defending sovereignty and supporting regional stability.
