China's humanoid robot takes over presentation, car salesperson gig

Chinese automaker Chery unveiled Mornine, the latest humanoid robot designed to bridge the world of automobiles and embodied intelligence. The robot stepped onto the stage to deliver a full-fledged presentation at the AiMOGA Global Business Conference held on October 20 in Wuhu, China. Media, partners, and experts from over 30 countries attended this event. The female humanoid also worked as a car sales assistant, greeting visitors, holding conversations, and presenting car features in multiple languages. First revealed in July 2024, Mornine became the world’s first humanoid robot to open a car door autonomously. It used full-body motion control, reinforcement learning, and onboard sensors to achieve this feat. Backed by Chery, AiMOGA Robotics is a platform designed to merge automotive technology, global operations, and embedded intelligence to create an innovative ecosystem. The vision for AiMOGA Robotics AiMOGA Robotics is pursuing a future where vehicles and humanoids work seamlessly together. The company called this a new form of synergy towards enhancing human convenience and mobility, retail, and daily life. Mornine embodies this vision with her autonomous motion, multimodal perception, and an AI-powered brain that allows her to operate autonomously in real-world scenarios like showrooms and exhibitions. What did Mornine do at the event? Mornine surprised the viewers with its ability to speak in different languages. It delivered a presentation about AiMOGA’s robotics and automotive technologies for more than 30 minutes. Later, Mornine also acted as a fully independent car assistant, greeting visitors and explaining features of cars – just like human assistants do. It also approached a Chery vehicle, opened the car door, and guided a simulated customer through its features. Mornine used vision-language understanding and semantic reasoning to respond to questions naturally and adjusted its gestures to the conversation. It also adopted its tone based on the visitors’ reactions. Overall, the demo showcased not just movement accuracy but social intelligence as well. The technology behind Mornine Mornine’s abilities are powered by AiMOGA’s new L3 Assistance Level framework, an upgrade on the L2 Collaboration Level. It uses high-torque joints for smooth motion, 17 degrees of freedom(DoF) in its hands for dexterity, and a multilingual AI model named MoNet for understanding speech, images, and intent. The robot can perceive its surroundings, plan actions, and execute them autonomously – much like a human trainee learning by experience. This technology stems from AiMOGA’s Vehicle-Robot Synergy Innovation Center, which integrates car cockpit systems with robot control expertise. Significance and future outlook AiMOGA is using Chery’s 11,000+ outlets as leverage to expand its robot delivery. The Mornine demonstration signaled a shift from robotics as spectacle to robotics as service. AiMOGA has already deployed it in 30+ countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, the UAE, and South Africa. As the world’s first humanoid robot with EU Hardware and Software Certification, Mornine represents AiMOGA’s ambition to redefine customer engagement through embodied AI. By 2030, the company expects to deliver 40,00 humanoids and 90,000 quadrupeds working across various fields like education, sales, and companionship.
