TIGARD Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - Pretzels contaminated with oven cleaner were mistakenly served to students during a sixth-grade lunch period in Oregon, according to school officials. A total of 37 pretzels were served at Fowler Middle School before the contamination was discovered. Staff quickly found the affected students and followed safety procedures, according to officials. The Oregon Poison Control Center was contacted and they advised that the oven cleaner involved can cause a burning feeling or vomiting if ingested in significant amounts. Students who ate the pretzels were instructed to rinse their mouths with water, eat bland food like a granola bar or bread and monitor symptoms for 24 hours. “All families whose students reported eating all or part of a pretzel were contacted individually,” the school said in a message to parents. “If you were contacted today and your student is continuing to experience symptoms, call poison control and contact your medical provider or call 911.” School administrators said the safety and health of students remains their top priority. It was not immediately clear how the pretzels were contaminated with oven cleaner.
