A child has died after an incident took place involving "hazardous materials" in a flat in east London. Several nearby homes were also told to evacuate in the midst of the incident. The London Fire Brigade were alerted to the incident taking place on Tuesday afternoon (October 28) and arrived at the scene on Barking Road in the Upton Park area of Newham at around 1:18pm. Immediately, officers were on the case, after people had reported the smell of chemicals coming from a flat. In total, two adults and two children had complained about the smell coming from the flat, which prompted the emergency services to be called. One of the children eventually needed to be taken to hospital for further treatment, but sadly died later in the afternoon. In a statement, London Fire Brigade confirmed that several other homes and flats had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure whilst crews dealt with the matter at hand. In total, 12 different people had to be moved from their homes. The brigade added that as well as dealing with the smell of chemicals, the force carried out a "systematic sweep of the affected property", in order to work out whether there were any "hazardous materials" around. They also ventilated the space, so that the smell of chemicals could dissipate and allow those affected to return home. Several different fire crews from across the capital were called to deal with the incident, including those from Euston, Poplar and Millwall. After three hours of dealing with the incident, fire crews left the flat block and considered the matter as being handled. Since then, investigations have now been handed to the Metropolitan Police to look at how the suspected chemicals could have leaked in the apartment. The fire brigade confirmed they would be helping the police in their investigations wherever they could. This is not the first time that a child has sadly passed away as a result of hazardous materials in a London flat. Back in 2021, an 11-year-old girl died after she was exposed to "pest control chemicals" in her own flat, with another three people being taken to hospital as a result.
