Child and woman dead after car crash in outback Queensland community

A 30-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl have died, while another passenger remains in intensive care, in the remote Aboriginal community of Doomadgee after a serious traffic crash. Emergency services were called to Doomadgee Road, 400 kilometres north of Mount Isa, at about 6:30am following reports a vehicle had flipped and crashed. The driver and four passengers were located with serious injuries. The driver, a 30-year-old Cloncurry woman, was administered first aid but died at the scene. A passenger, a 10-year-old girl, was transported to Doomadgee Hospital where she was declared deceased. Two other passengers were transported to Doomadgee Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a third passenger is in a critical condition. A crime scene has been declared and investigations are ongoing. A 28-year-old man known to the deceased was taken into custody shortly after. Police are urging the community to remain respectful as investigations continue. The Queensland Police Service is supporting the Doomadgee community and local officers at this time. Shops in the community have closed for Sorry Business, and Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council has shared condolences to the families who lost loved ones on social media. The council has also asked residents to avoid the Doomadgee Road highway until further notice.
