Chiefs GM Brett Veach's NFL trade deadline priorities might have shifted with Mike Pennel's return, Isiah Pacheco's injury

The Kansas City Chiefs' 2025 NFL trade deadline priorities might have changed over the past week, with the Tuesday, Nov. 4 deadline rapidly approaching. There was a clear need at the interior defensive line position after the injury to Omarr Norman-Lott. That need might no longer be at the top of Kansas City's priority list after a recent addition and other injuries. Brett Veach has historically been aggressive at the NFL trade deadline, particularly when it comes to acquiring talent. Will he be making any moves this year? How Mike Pennel's return impacts Chiefs' NFL trade deadline priorities The Chiefs made things official with veteran DT Mike Pennel on Wednesday, signing him to the 53-man roster after he was granted his release from the Cincinnati Bengals. Having been in Kansas City for four seasons previously, Pennel will be immediately integrated into the defense. While his return doesn't exactly scratch the itch for pass-rush help, it does give the Chiefs quality depth along the defensive interior. That's a good thing because there's a lot of competition out there for interior defensive line help."There are a number of teams who badly want and need interior defensive line help," NFL Insider Jordan Schultz said on Oct. 29. The Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens are among the teams searching for D-Line help, and the options out there aren't plentiful. It makes the timing of the reunion with Pennel feel close to perfect. It also allows Chiefs GM Brett Veach to focus on other positions of need. Even on the defensive side of the ball, it might be easier to find an edge rusher who can contribute than an interior defensive lineman, given the market competition. It also might be more valuable to this team long-term, so long as they get someone who can contribute. Chiefs GM Brett Veach's NFL Trade Deadline History 2021: Melvin Ingram 2022: Kadarius Toney 2023: Mecole Hardman 2024: DeAndre Hopkins & Josh Uche Isiah Pacheco's injury could also play a part for Kansas City Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco appears slated to miss time with an MCL sprain, but how much time remains to be seen. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Chiefs HC Andy Reid suggested Pacheco's injury won't be long-term. “I don’t think so," Reid said. "We’ll just see how he (Isiah Pacheco) is moving around," Reid said. "(He’s) a tough kid. There was a point there where he wanted to go back in, and I wouldn’t let him. But that’s how he’s wired, you’d have to cut his leg off to stop him.”The recovery timeline for an MCL sprain can range from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the severity. The ideal situation for the Chiefs would be for Pop to sit out Week 9 against the Bills and the Week 10 bye, returning for Week 11 against the Denver Broncos. However, suppose there's even a slight chance that Pacheco is on the longer end of the recovery range. In that case, it might be wise for Kansas City to poke around on the running back trade market, especially if Elijah Mitchell doesn't get himself involved in the game plan on Sunday. The competition at the running back position won't be as strong as the interior defensive line or edge rusher markets, with the New England Patriots among the few teams actively seeking help there. Two teams in their division, the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, are among the teams believed to have players available at the running back position. This article was originally published on A to Z Sports Kansas City Chiefs, as Chiefs GM Brett Veach's NFL trade deadline priorities might have shifted with Mike Pennel's return, Isiah Pacheco's injury
