AgenciesDelhi govt is working on a new liquor policy
The Delhi government is reportedly gearing up to announce a fresh liquor policy within the next month, according to a Times Now report. One of the proposals under discussion is lowering the legal drinking age from 25 to 21, though sources suggest the decision is not yet final. The report also indicates that premium liquor brands could soon be made available across all retail outlets in the capital. Additionally, the government is considering aligning liquor prices with those in the rest of the NCR to curb cross-border sales and revenue leakage. At present, premium brands face restrictions under the existing excise framework, a factor officials believe has led to significant revenue losses. The Times of India earlier reported that the upcoming policy may also involve removing liquor vends from congested residential areas, redesigning outlets to be cleaner and safer, and updating pricing to match neighboring states. Currently, four state-run corporations operate all liquor outlets in Delhi. Each shop earns a fixed margin of ₹50 per bottle of hard liquor, irrespective of the brand or price. While this ensures uniformity, critics argue the model discourages innovation and limits the scope for improving customer experience. The proposed changes are expected to open the door for a more consumer-centric approach. The existing excise policy—first rolled out in September 2022 after the controversial 2021-22 regime was scrapped—has been extended through March 31, 2026. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who set up a review committee last month, has emphasized the need for a policy that is transparent, financially sustainable, and socially responsible.Live EventsAdd as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
