LANSING, MI -- Tammy Carvey doesn’t play the lottery often, so when she decided to play Powerball recently, she didn’t have a set of numbers she routinely plays. Rather than selecting the easy pick option, the 45-year-old Wyandotte resident turned to artificial intelligence for some help. “I only play Powerball when the jackpot gets up there and the jackpot was over $1 billion so I bought a ticket,” Carvey said. “I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers and those are the numbers I played on my ticket.” The AI program knew something that millions of others didn’t, as Carvey ended up matching four of the five white numbers drawn and the Powerball -- 11-23-44-61-62 PB: 17 -- to win a significant prize. “When I checked the winning numbers, I saw I matched four white balls and the Powerball and knew I had to have won something. Google told me it was a $50,000 prize, so that’s what I thought I’d won,” Carvey said. “It wasn’t until I logged into my Michigan Lottery account that I realized I added the Power Play to my ticket and actually won $100,000! My husband and I were in total disbelief.” The Power Play option is a bonus offering which multiplies non-jackpot wins by up to 10 times. The Power Play for this drawing was 2X. Carvey bought her ticket for the Sept. 6 Powerball drawing on the Michigan lottery website. With her winnings, she plans on paying off her home and saving the remainder. The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Breakfast Club lottery club which claimed a $842 million jackpot in June 2024. The members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel. And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a Powerball winner worth $250,000 sold in Bloomfield Hills in 2024 went unclaimed. That money went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
