It’s only Week 2, but Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Chase McLaughlin is already in dangerous territory when it comes to the future of his job.The usually-reliable veteran has missed three total kicks on eight combined attempts. He’s missed two of his three field goal attempts and one of his five PATs. All three misses have come in key moments when the Bucs needed the points – they’re aren’t just attempts that were more part of the game flow or anything like that. The Bucs haven’t brought in competition for McLaughlin yet, but the option is certainly on the table and Tampa Bay will waste zero time in adding another kicker to the practice squad after listening to Todd Bowles speak on Wednesday.
“[It’s] a bit [of] a sore topic with me,” Bowles told reporters after practice. “I don’t believe none of that other stuff – just make the damn kick…”… [He’s] gotta make them. They’re concerning. They’ve happened two weeks in a row. Obviously we have to get better there. We gotta block it better, we gotta kick it better, and we gotta make them. It’s really cut and dry.”
There aren’t many veteran options currently on the market, but Austin Seibert makes sense if he’s healthy
Who would the Bucs bring in to challenge McLaughlin if it comes down to that? When looking at the market, there aren’t many options, so one would think Jason Licht and Co. would have to do some digging in order to find their guy.Austin Seibert is the most enticing option, but his health could be a factor. He was having a really good season with the Washington Commanders in 2024 until groin and hip injuries started affecting his play. He eventually landed on injured reserve and parted ways with the Commanders after the end of the year. He made 27-of-30 field goal attempts with a long of 55 and 22-of-24 PATs before going on IR.This is easily one of the biggest surprises of the Tampa Bay’s young 2025 season. Regardless, McLaughlin and the Bucs won’t have to worry about any of this if he gets back on track. Unfortunately, only time will tell with that scenario and the hope is it doesn’t cost Bowles and Co. any wins in the process.
