Charleston County School District board member charged with domestic violence

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A Charleston County School Board member and state senator’s wife is facing charges she said are based on false accusations by her reportedly estranged husband. Known professionally just as Michele Leber, Suzanne Michele Leber, 55, is charged with domestic violence in the third degree. Jail records show she was booked Friday just after 8 a.m. The details behind the charges have not been released; however, both Michele Leber and State Sen. Matt Leber have released separate statements on the matter. “There are a lot of false allegation being shared by my estranged husband who broke our marriage up with his affair. This is all [an attempt] to regain his public persona and discredit me,” Michele Leber said on Facebook. “I am asking for his resignation!” Before that post, Matt Leber posted the following to his Facebook page: Dear Constituents and Friends, Many of you may have heard, or will soon hear, reports regarding the legal challenges facing my estranged wife, Michele. Over the past few years, I have strived to handle these serious personal and family matters privately, with respect and the utmost dignity for all involved. Michele and I have been working to negotiate the end of our marriage for more than a year. Despite our efforts to part amicably, circumstances have escalated to a point where the safety and well-being of our children must be my paramount priority. I am fully cooperating with the authorities and have faith in the legal process to ensure fairness for everyone. During this difficult time, I kindly request privacy and respect for my children and family. I sincerely hope Michele receives the support and assistance she needs. Thank you for your understanding and compassion. Michele Leber remains in the custody of the Al Cannon Detention Center. As of 10 a.m. Friday, Michele Leber remains listed as a member of the Charleston County School District Board of Trustees. School district spokesman Andrew Pruitt said, “CCSD is not aware of the full details of the situation involving Trustee Leber. As this is a personal matter unrelated to district business, we are unable to provide further comment.” This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
