Unlike most years, the first rankings released by the College Football Playoff selection committee didn't cause much drama. More News: Auburn Given College Football Playoff Warning After Firing Hugh Freeze On Tuesday night, ESPN revealed what the first bracket would look like if the playoffs were held after Week 10. The cutoff for the CFP looks like this: (1) Ohio State, (2) Indiana, (3) Texas A&M, (4) Alabama, (5) Georgia, (6) Ole Miss, (7) BYU, (8) Texas Tech, (9) Oregon, (10) Notre Dame, (11) Virginia and (12) Memphis. (Texas is ranked No. 11 and Oklahoma No. 12, but Virginia and Memphis would slide into the CFP over them via being projected as conference winners.) More News: LSU Linked to Ultimate Anti-Brian Kelly Candidate The largest discrepancy with the first rankings appears to be Notre Dame and No. 18 Miami. The Hurricanes knocked off the Irish 27-24 at home in Week 1. Despite having the same 6-2 record, the selection committee appears to be going off the old eye test instead of valuing head-to-head matchups. After losing to Miami and Texas A&M by a total of four points, the Irish have won six games in a row, including a convincing 34-24 win over then-No. 20 USC on Oct. 18. Miami has lost two of its last three outings, including a humbling 26-20 defeat in overtime to SMU in Week 10. Not long after the rankings were revealed, college football fans took to social media to complain about why the Irish were ranked so many spots above the Hurricanes. "Notre Dame is ranked ahead of Texas and Oklahoma," posted Ari Wasserman of On3. "It's not just Miami. I think this year's Notre Dame team is the most mis-ranked team I've ever seen in the initial CFP Poll in a decade." "Notre Dame has played 3 ranked teams and lost to 2 of them… crazy!!!!" wrote a fan. "Notre Dame must join a P4 conference to participate," argued a fan. "Eliminate auto bids. Re seed every round. Home games first two weeks. Just my issues with the format in general… with the rankings m, Notre Dame makes zero sense at all. There’s 5-7 teams I would have ahead of them." "Somebody explain to me how Notre Dame is number 10?!?! They have 2 losses, their best win is USC. I'm so confused," posted another. "Appears committee is still weighing eye test or subjective measures heavy vs analytics and strength of record metrics," believes a poster. "Notre Dame ahead of OU-Texas and 8 ahead of Miami with same # of losses and beat ND doesn’t look right…especially considering ND soft schedule overall and upcoming." "Notre Dame too high. Who have they beaten? They lost head to head to Miami. Struggled to beat a 1-7 Boston college," posted another. The Irish still have one more ranked game remaining on their schedule to impress fans and the committee. ND will travel to play No. 24 Pittsburgh on Nov. 15. Miami will finish its season against the same opponent on Nov. 29, giving the Hurricanes one more opportunity to use the eye test to overcome Notre Dame by gaining style points against the Panthers.
