The Colleges of Education Teachers Association (CETAG) is buckling for industrial action next month if the government continues to fail to honour the arbitral award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) in May 2023. In a statement, it said the Government had failed to pay the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance arrears as agreed with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on 30th April, 2025, despite repeated engagements and assurances. “This money was originally supposed to be paid together with the 2024/2025 Book and Research Allowance.” It also cited non-payment of their top up of 2022 Book and Research Allowance of Akrokerri College of Education as well as concerns about their all-Year-Round Work compensation for the remaining thirty-nine (39) Colleges of Education for additional duty performed in 2022; the downgrading of experienced staff; and non-payment of the 2022/2023 Book and Research Allowance Arrears which it said is contingent on their migration onto the university salary structure. “CETAG views these delays and omissions as a breach of trust and a disregard for the rule of law governing labour relations. The NLC’s arbitral award is not optional but binding on the government of the day.” CETAG wants full implementation of all outstanding components of the NLC arbitral award by the end of October 2025. It affirmed that if the government fails to honour the arbitral awards by November 7, 2025, members would lay down their tools until the last pesewa is paid. Story by Hajara Fuseini
