Bill Chisholm gets hyped up for Celtics games: New Celtics owner Bill Chisholm has let it be known that he grew up a fan of the team he just purchased. Behind the scenes, Chisholm might be a bigger fan than he had previously let on.
In an interview on NBC Sports Boston’s “Celtics Talk Podcast,” Chisholm detailed the hype videos he’d send his family before playoff games during the Celtics’ run to a title in 2024.
“It’s basically just me making a fool of myself out in the driveway with a basketball at 6-feet and still not being able to dunk,” Chisholm told Chris Forsberg. “Trying to build some energy around it for my extended family, just having a good time with it. I knew they were going to win. I did some videos before that, proclaiming that, and they got it done.”
While Chisholm admittedly said that he didn’t display the best basketball skills in those videos, he added some creativity to those videos by putting some music in.
“One of them is set to ‘Rocky’ music,” Chisholm said. “Another one’s set to Guns ‘N Roses. ‘I’m Shipping Up to Boston’ is on standby.”
Chisholm added that he’s recently learned “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” is a favorite of Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, saying that he plays the song in every practice. Chisholm called Mazzulla a “terrific coach” at his introductory press conference as the new owner of the Celtics on Thursday.
Chisholm, who grew up in Georgetown and attended Dartmouth, took his Celtics fandom with him when he moved to California. In fact, he said that his youngest son, Quentin, was such a big fan of the Celtics that he’d break Chisholm’s promise to watch games together.
“I think it was impossible not to [become a Celtics fan] when I had been such a nut,” Chisholm said. “Because I was on the West Coast and the Celtics would play at 4 o’clock. and I’d be at work, so I’d tape the games. He would want to watch the games, but I’d say ‘Just wait for me to get home and we can watch the games.’ He just couldn’t do it. He was 7, 8 years old, so that self-control wasn’t there yet.
“So, the deal was, if you’re going to watch, you can’t tell me what happens. I always knew if he was out in the driveway and shooting hoops, the Celtics won. If he was up in his room, the Celtics lost. He wasn’t up in his room very often.”
Now, Chisholm, his wife, Kimberly, and their three kids will have a front-row seat to Celtics games. That’s something that the new Celtics owner is already cherishing.
“It’s really a source of joy for our family,” Chisholm said. “I wish everyone had that opportunity. The sports and Celtics, specifically for our family, it just really connects you with other people. There’s nothing like being in an area and having thousands of people going nuts, and your family’s there and you’re all pulling for the same thing.
“It’s a really joyful experience, and I just have incredible gratitude for that.”
Trivia: The Celtics have the longest active playoff appearances streak in the NBA. When was the last time they missed the postseason?
(Hint: It wasn’t too long after they traded a pair of their top stars.)
Scores and schedules:
The Red Sox haven’t clinched a ticket to the playoffs yet, losing to the Blue Jays on Thursday. Following its 6-1 defeat, Boston still needs to win one more game in order to make the playoffs. The Red Sox can also punch their ticket to the postseason with one more Astros loss. The Red Sox begin their final regular-season series on Friday when they host the Tigers. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.
Boston College football is back in action this weekend after a Week 4 bye. The Eagles host Cal on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Patriots are also home again this weekend. They host the 1-2 Panthers at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

As the Red Sox need one more win or an Astros loss to reach the postseason, they currently hold the No. 5 seed in the American League. If there’s no change in the standings between Friday and the end of regular-season play on Sunday, the Red Sox will play the Yankees in New York in the Wild Card Series.
On this day:
One year ago on Friday, the Athletics played their final game in Oakland. As they took down the Rangers, 3-2, the week featured multiple emotional ceremonies at Oakland Coliseum. Former Red Sox stars Ricky Henderson and Dennis Eckersley, who obviously both played for the Athletics, were a part of the ceremonies as the team said goodbye to Oakland.
Daily highlight:
As the Reds try to sneak into the playoffs, right fielder Noelvi Martin might have saved their season. With the Reds holding a 2-1 lead over the Pirates in the ninth inning, Martin robbed Bryan Reynolds of hitting a game-tying home run.
Following Thursday, the Reds are one game behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League.
