Celebrity Traitors' Alan Carr says health battle left him unable to 'do anything'

Celebrity Traitors star Alan Carr has opened up about how he was left completely incapacitated after battling a debilitating health condition last year. The beloved comedian and TV present is set to appear on the final of the first ever Celebrity Traitors tonight (Thursday, November 6). He will be joined by actor Nick Mohammed, singer-songwriter Cat Burns, ex-rugby player Joe Marler and historian David Olusoga. The entertainer made the disclosure during an appearance on singer (and fellow Celebrity Traitors contestant) Paloma Faith's Mad, Sad and Bad podcast earlier this year as he discussed his issue. When she enquired whether the 48 year old had any concerns about getting older, he replied: "I had Sciatica last year and I couldn't do anything." However, whilst discussing the impact of his recent health struggle, the comedian characteristically found humour in the situation: "When you're younger, you're so arrogant, you think people get old for a bet. You think 'oh look at that man, he's got a stick for a laugh'." He went on to say that his recent bout with sciatica had completely floored him, reports Surrey Live . The NHS explains that sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, which extends from your lower back down to your feet, becomes irritated or compressed. The condition typically improves within several weeks to months, though it can persist for longer periods. Sciatica "usually affects your bottom and the back of one leg, often including your foot and toes". Signs of the condition may include sharp, burning sensations down the back of the leg, pins and needles, numbness and muscle weakness. Experts estimate that roughly 40% of people in the UK will experience the condition at some stage during their lives. Alan has been a familiar face on our telly for the past two decades, but his television career really took off in 2007 when he hosted his own programme, Alan Carr's Celebrity Ding Dong, which was broadcast on Channel 4 until 2009. Following the conclusion of his first eponymous show, Alan secured another gig, this time hosting the immensely popular Alan Carr: Chatty Man from 2009 to 2016, spanning 16 series. The show was so successful that Alan received a BAFTA for Best Entertainment Performance in 2013. Alan stars in the Celebrity Traitors finale tonight (Thursday, November 6) from 8pm to 9pm on BBC One.
