He has many childhood memories of Hollywood Boulevard from the 1950s, going to movies with his parents. Englund remembers the glamour of Hollywood and the ups and downs of the Boulevard where his star will be installed. His star will be placed in front of Larry Edmunds Bookshop, which sells books about movies, TV, and theater.Early hollywood and struggling actor daysEnglund’s roommates worked at that bookstore when he was a young, struggling actor. He would visit them at lunch to share a sandwich because none of them had money at that time. The roommates were working on a screenplay that later became the 1987 cult classic The Lost Boys. Englund has many stories about his early Hollywood life, his “starving actor” days, and how he got the role of Freddy. He enjoys talking about the evolution of Freddy’s makeup and praises all the artists who worked on it. Englund explains that Freddy Krueger became scarier than other horror characters like Jason (Friday the 13th) and Michael Myers (Halloween) because of his unique personality and knife fingers, as stated by Forbes. He is currently enjoying publicity for his star and a new 4K DVD collection of all seven Nightmare movies, released by Warner Bros. to celebrate 40 years of the films.Becoming Freddy Krueger and acting secretsBefore Freddy, Englund appeared in about a dozen movies and had his first big success in the NBC miniseries V. He says taking the role of Freddy was not a planned choice, but it fit his schedule between projects for V. Englund admired director Wes Craven’s earlier work and really liked the Nightmare script. He compared reading the script to reading Stephen King and enjoyed how Craven explained the story and symbolism.Live EventsEnglund describes Freddy as “a burned boogeyman that haunts the dreams of the children of the vigilante parents that burned him alive”. He found inspiration for Freddy’s personality while watching young actors Johnny Depp and Heather Langenkamp on set. Englund was tired and sweaty from early morning makeup, and seeing the young, attractive actors sparked envy and jealousy, which he used to shape Freddy, as stated by Forbes. He thought of Freddy as “killing the future” and used that feeling as a mental tool to act like Freddy in every movie. Englund says this mental trick helped him get into character even decades later. Freddy Krueger became one of the most infamous horror characters ever, thanks to Englund’s acting choices and creativity. FAQsQ1.
