The Parents’ Association (AMPA) of CEIP Josefina Manresa in Orihuela has raised concerns over the poor condition of the school facilities, which fall under the responsibility of the City Council and the Department of Education. According to the AMPA, the “last straw” was the inaction regarding four broken taps in the schoolyard fountain, vandalized on August 15. Despite numerous maintenance reports and repeated requests to the Education Department, there has been no response. As a result, the AMPA found a “good Samaritan” to carry out the work the council had neglected, managing to replace two of the four taps needed for over 300 children, who until now had to go to the bathrooms to drink or refill their bottles. The AMPA also states that they contacted the Infrastructure Department to see if they could intervene or send a repair crew, but “no one responded.” Parents report that inspection teams visited a few weeks ago to assess repairs, but “to everyone’s surprise, the hardware budget was exhausted, leaving workers unable to perform their tasks due to lack of materials.” The AMPA emphasizes that CEIP Josefina Manresa suffers from inaction across multiple City Council departments: the Education Department, Infrastructure (for failing to respond or offer solutions), and the Economic Department (under Mayor Pepe Vegara), which they consider responsible for ensuring a budget for school repairs.
