An emergency services operator in San Javier was injured on October 26 when part of the ceiling collapsed while she was on duty at the 112 call center. According to the Workers’ Commissions (Comisiones Obreras), a plasterboard panel from the false ceiling struck the employee on the head, causing minor injuries. The union denounced the poor safety conditions at the municipal Security Center, describing the building as “half a century old” and “unfit for purpose.” It warned that the facility, originally intended as a temporary structure, continues to be used despite its deteriorating condition. Comisiones Obreras stated that it has filed several complaints with the Labor Inspectorate over the years, prompting repeated orders for the city council to address the building’s deficiencies. “We have been calling for years for new facilities for the Local Police and Civil Protection that ensure safety for workers and users, with spaces adapted to current regulations,” said Miguel Alcaraz, the union’s General Secretary of Local Administration. The union also reminded officials that the Popular Party’s last municipal election platform included plans for a new Comprehensive Security Center—a project that has yet to be realized. In light of the incident, Comisiones Obreras is demanding an immediate safety assessment by a municipal architect or technician to verify the building’s structural integrity and compliance with safety standards. It also urges the city council to begin construction of a new Security Center, similar to those in neighbouring municipalities. The San Javier Council stated that the room was immediately evacuated after the collapse and employees were relocated to other facilities. “The false ceiling was dismantled, mouldings secured, and new removable panels installed,” the council said. “A full inspection of the remaining ceilings throughout the building was undertaken to ensure safety.”
