Catherine Connolly is set to become Ireland's 10 president today at a ceremony at Dublin Castle. The Independent TD, who won last month's presidential election with a landslide victory, has already vowed to make a priority of hers the "welfare of the people of Ireland." The Galway woman takes over from Michael D. Higgins, who left Áras an Uachtaráin for the final time on Monday evening to cheers and applause. His 14-year term in office is widely-praised as he is credited with pivoting the role to having a greater say in Irish politics. Tuesday's proceedings will see Ms Connolly travel to Dublin Castle to sign a written declaration that will inaugurate her as Ireland's new Head of State, or Uachtarán na hÉireann. Chief Justice of Ireland Donal O’Donnell will present Ms Connolly with the seal of office and a 21-gun salute will take place at Collins Barracks to mark the occasion.
