Catch up on Zachary fall sports

We are almost one month into the 2025 fall prep season and things are happening for the Zachary Broncos.
Football
At the time of writing, the Broncos are 2-0 after two home victories over Plaquemine (52-28) and Acadiana (30-14).
The Broncos are currently ranked 10th in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll. After an open date this week, an originally scheduled road game against Opelousas Oct. 3 will now be held at Bronco Stadium, as there is still work being performed on the Opelousas home field.
District starts the following week as Scotlandville makes the short trip north to Zachary.
Volleyball
The ZHS volleyball team has started hot, rolling out to a 7-2 record that includes two straight road wins over Port Allen and a five set nail biter over perennial power Episcopal (20-25, 16-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-13).
Coach Cheri Perry has the team turned in the right direction for home games against McKinley this week, Sept. 25, and home games the following week against East Ascension, Sept. 29 and Slaughter Charter.
District play kicks in on Oct. 16 on the road against Baton Rouge High.
Cross-country
The ZHS cross-country team has already participated in a scrimmage, the Eddie Cole Classic in Thibodaux, and two meets at Highland Park (47th Annual Episcopal/Varsity EHS Round Table Run and St. Michaels Bayou Boogie).
At the Episcopal meet on Sept. 13 the top boys finisher was Max Gennaro (third at 15:26.43) and the top girls finisher was Blair Smith (20:35.07).
The boys finished sixth overall out of 32 teams and the girls finished 12th. They both will be in competition Oct. 18 when they host the Bronco Cross-Country Stampede at the Port Hudson State Historic Site.
The Northwestern Braves will also host a cross-country race later in the day. Speaking of the Braves, Gerrett Anthony placed first (12:36.88) and Maci Septs finished fourth (15:30.24) at the Brusly Middle Invitational on September 13th.
The top finishers for the Copper Mill girls and boys were Zoe Raper (11th at 16:22.17) and Hudson Broussard (13:07.24), respectively. The Copper Mill boys finished first overall and the Northwestern boys finished third.
On the girls side, the Northwestern girls finished in first place closely followed by the Copper Mill girls in second.
Swimming
Speaking of the Braves, the Northwestern swim team kicked off their season on Friday at Crawfish Aquatics with top eight finishers Gabriella Moruzzi, Wade Guy, Guillermo Vasquez, Vanessa VanDevander, Keri Price and Jace Smart.
The Braves 16 swimmer roster will compete in the city championship on Nov. 8 at Crawfish Aquatics.
Weekly college football check in
Staying in Louisiana and closer to home, Clifton Webb, freshman offensive lineman, and Sean Hamilton freshman defensive lineman are competing for Southern (1-2). Though they may not be making immediate impacts, give them a break they are only freshmen. Don’t be surprised to see them hitting the field soon for the Jaguars.
After starting his college career at Louisiana Tech, Luke Wisham headed north to Jonesboro, Arkansas where he is now a cornerback for the Arkansas State Red Wolves (1-3).
Remember safety Kylin Jackson? He left LSU and is now playing safety at TCU (2-0). Jackson registered a sack and three tackles against Abilene Christian, and three tackles and a tackle for loss against North Carolina.
