CARPHA and UWI Step In to Support Jamaica The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has mobilised a high-level team to assist Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa. Executive Director Dr Lisa Indar joined leaders from CARICOM, CDEMA, the Caribbean Development Bank, and the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology to assess urgent needs on the ground. Dr Indar met with Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton to coordinate CARPHA’s public health response. The team also visited hospitals and shelters in the hardest-hit parishes of St Elizabeth, St James, Trelawny, Manchester, Hanover, and Westmoreland. Meanwhile, the University of the West Indies, Mona, has introduced support for affected students, including safe spaces, psychosocial services, flexible academic options, and a 50% tuition discount for Semester 1. Face-to-face classes at the western campus have been postponed.
