Carol Burnett would have poached Kristen Wiig for her eponymous variety show if she could have back in the day. While the actresses now share the screen in Apple TV’s Palm Royale, which returns for Season 2 today, they both once starred on sketch comedy shows decades apart, Burnett on the iconic The Carol Burnett Show from 1967 to 1978, and Wiig on Saturday Night Live from 2005 to 2012. “When I first saw Kristen on SNL, I said if our ages had been different and if I was doing my show and she was doing [it] at the same time, I think I would have stolen her away if I could to be on my show every week,” Burnett told Parade in an exclusive interview. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 The legendary comedian, 92, explained that “there was this thing there between” her and Wiig, which Burnett remarked to Wiig, 52, “You didn’t even know about because we hadn’t met yet.” Burnett said, “And now, to know her and to be friends with her and to love her and work with her, you know, all good things can happen, and this is one of them for me.” “For me, too,” Wiig agreed. “Even though we couldn’t work together on my show, we’re working together in [Palm Royale],” Burnett added. The Bridesmaids actress exclusively told Parade, “[Carol] inspired me so much as a sketch comedy performer and as a woman in the business, and I think to be able to do scenes with her now, it feels like home.” It’s also been “so fun” for Wiig having a comedy hero play her nemesis, Norma Dellacorte, onscreen in Palm Royale, which returned for its second season on Nov. 12.
