Well-known cardiologist and former Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Dr CN Manjunath, on Monday, emphasised that improving public health requires not just better medical infrastructure but also a pollution-free environment.Speaking at the Net Zero Summit organised by the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) in Bengaluru, Dr Manjunath said air, water, and soil pollution pose major challenges to human health. “Many think air pollution only causes respiratory problems. But studies show that pollutant particles smaller than 2.5 microns, when inhaled, can lead to heart attacks and strokes,” he said. The cardiologist urged people to keep their surroundings clean for healthier living. He added that living in big cities was no longer a joy due to rampant pollution. Manjunath listed out the health issues air pollution. He said apart from fatal heart attacks, air pollution can create irregular heartbeats, which in turn can worsen heart failures, miscarriages among women. "Even a child born in such a condition may be weak and exposed to health problems," the cardiologist warned. Dr Manjunath represents Bengaluru Rural in the Lok Sabha.Addressing the summit, K. Srinivasulu, IFS, Secretary of the Environment and Forest Department, said forests play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance. “Technology is playing with nature, but nature has the strength to hit back. We must nourish forests for the good of society,” he said.Live EventsAt the end of the summit, participants also adopted the Bangalore Declaration on the achieve to Net Zero. The group also urged the government to create a Climate Law and frame a clear roadmap for climate action based on the Supreme Court’s 2024 judgment.The declaration also called for mandating Corporate Research Responsibility (CRR), requiring companies to allocate at least 25% of their CSR budgets toward home-grown research on climate mitigation, with a focus on indigenous technologies and practices.Experts at the summit recommended granting legal recognition to sacred groves as protected areas to support carbon sink targets and proposed the creation of State Climate Councils with youth and civil society representation to revive traditional sustainable practices.The event was attended by experts, policymakers, and environmentalists.
