The draw for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals is complete, and highlights include a London derby between Arsenal and Crystal Palace. Holders Newcastle United are up against Fulham at St James' Park, while Cardiff City host Chelsea and Manchester City against Brentford. Tuesday's matches brought victories for Cardiff City, Fulham and Brentford. Cardiff are the lowest-ranked team left in the competition after fellow League One outfit Wycombe took Fulham all the way at Adams Park but lost on penalties. Four of Wednesday's five games were all-Premier League affairs, with Swansea - up against Manchester City = the one exception. City survived an early scare before coming back to win 3-1 in Wales, but there were big casualties elsewhere. Last season's beaten finalists Liverpool fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace after Arne Slot rung the changes, while Europa League holders Tottenham lost away at Carabao Cup holders Newcastle. Arsenal and Chelsea are also into the last eight. The Gunners scored two without reply at home to Brighton as their defensive supremacy continued, while Chelsea survived a Wolves fightback to claim a nervy 4-3 win at Molineux. Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner didn't think his team needed to be at their best to see off Liverpool. "First 15 minutes we didn't do well, we had the feeling we were still in the hotel beds," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "Played slowly into the game, we scored nice goals, the performance was OK, but it was not a great performance." Liverpool manager Arne Slot defended his team selection after a youthful side was eliminated. ""People who know this club, or who have followed this club know for this competition we use it for younger players," he told Sky Sports. Elsewhere, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was pleased with how his team handled the challenge of Spurs. "Really pleased because I think when you make the changes we did you hope to see a performance that's in line with our identity and our expectations," he said. "I thought the pressing early on in the game and general attitude of the players was very good." The four quarter-finals will take place on the week commencing December 15. Exact dates for the fixtures will be confirmed nearer the time as broadcasters choose matches for TV. The same stage of the competition last season brought a dramatic match in North London, with Tottenham winning 4-3 against Manchester United. Two of the other games featured teams still in this season's competitions, with Arsenal beating Crystal Palace 3-2 and Newcastle claiming a 3-1 win at home to Brentford, while Liverpool won 2-1 at Southampton in the remaining tie.
