Mazda’s global chief financial officer, Jeff Guyton, has taken aim at the world’s fixation on electric cars, stating that the globe is missing the picture on how to cut carbon emissions. Speaking at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, Guyton said the industry’s focus on zero tailpipe emissions had become “unbalanced”, arguing that renewable fuels could deliver faster and more practical reductions. Mr Guyton describes it as a “fundamental mistake” that the world continues to measure emissions only at the tailpipe, ignoring the full life cycle of energy generation. “EVs are not carbon neutral, they’re just zero carbon at the tailpipe,” he said. “The fundamental mistake we made as a society was not looking at the wheel-to-wheel energy lifecycle.” Instead of joining the race for an all-EV line-up, Mazda is investing in low-carbon fuels and technology designed to clean emissions from combustion engines. Mr Guyton confirmed Mazda is developing biofuels from algae, a process that distils oils from grown organisms that can be used in any existing car. “This fuel could go in any car; it doesn’t have to go in a special Mazda engine,” he said. “It’s a powerful way to address the installed vehicle base.” Mazda is also developing a carbon capture system that collects carbon dioxide from a vehicle’s exhaust. “The exhaust from an engine is CO2-rich, it’s a target-rich environment to grab CO2 from,” he explained. Mr Guyton said Mazda will test the technology later this year during an endurance race, though Guyton admitted there’s “no timeline yet” for production.
