Canucks New Trade Pitch Adds $10 Million Center

The Vancouver Canucks‘ start to the 2025-26 season has not been the greatest. They currently have a 7-8-0 record and are sixth in the Pacific Division standings. With the Canucks looking to get back into the playoffs after a disappointing 2024-25 season, this kind of start is far less than ideal. This is especially so when noting that they have only won four out of their 10 games. Injury trouble has certainly played a role in the Canucks’ shaky start to the 2025-26 season. Because of this, it would not be surprising in the slightest if the Canucks looked to add to their roster sooner rather than later. While they recently brought in Lukas Reichel from the Chicago Blackhawks, it is clear that they need more. Adding another center would be smart for the Canucks, especially when noting that Filip Chytil is currently sidelined. When looking at trade candidates around the NHL, San Jose Sharks forward Alexander Wennberg stands out as an interesting potential target. Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that has the Sharks sending Wennberg to Vancouver in an early-season swap. Canucks Get: Alexander Wennberg (50% Retained) Sharks Get: Teddy Blueger 2026 Second-Round Pick Canucks Have Checked in on Wennberg’s Availability During a recent appearance on Sekeres & Price, The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reported that Wennberg is available for trade, and the Canucks have checked in on the Sharks forward. “The short answer is yes,” Pagnotta said when asked if Wennberg is available for trade. “The Canucks have poked around on that to see what the availability is like.” With Wennberg being in the final season of his two-year, $10 million contract with the Sharks, it is not too surprising that his name is already floating around the rumor mill. The pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) could be a popular rental target for teams. With the Canucks needing help at the center position, it is understandable that they have had their eye on Wennberg. He would have the potential to provide the Canucks’ middle six with a nice upgrade if brought in. Furthermore, due to his strong two-way play, he would also work on both the Canucks’ penalty kill and power play if acquired. Wennberg has also had a solid start to the season, as he has recorded three goals, six assists, and nine points in 14 games. Yet, what is more encouraging is that he has only been heating up as the campaign rolls on. In his last five games, the 2013 first-round pick has recorded two goals and six points. Why Canucks Could Land Wennberg With This Trade Pitch With Wennberg being a solid middle-six center who is heating up, the Canucks would likely need to start a trade package with their 2026 second-round pick if the Sharks retain half of his $5 million cap hit. Then, for salary purposes, the Canucks could add a bottom-six forward like Teddy Blueger to the deal to get it done. With the Sharks rebuilding, getting a second-round pick for Wennberg certainly could be appealing to them. As for Blueger, the Sharks would be bringing in a veteran forward who could work on their penalty kill and mentor their younger players.
