Canelo Alvarez told he has ‘overstayed his welcome’ by Terence Crawford’s former opponent

Canelo told he has ‘overstayed his welcome’ at the top of boxing

Although Canelo and Crawford have been going through their respective careers at different weight classes, it seemed inevitable that they would one day clash in the ring.

After beating Jermell Charlo in a dominant display in 2023, Canelo was asked about the potential of fighting Crawford but at that time, he revealed he had no interest in fighting him.

Since then, he has continued showcasing why he is considered one of the best boxers on the planet, however, former opponent of Crawford, Shawn Porter, believes he has ‘overstayed his welcome’ at the top.

Crawford retired Porter when they clashed in 2020, becoming the first fighter to hand Porter a stoppage loss.

“If it’s not Terence Crawford I think the only other fight out there for him is a fight with David Benavidez, I think that it’s a fight we all wanna see,” Porter told Daily Mail Boxing.

“I tell you what, I don’t know if I’ve said this out loud but I’ve been retiring Canelo Alvarez for about two years. In 2022 I said, ‘Alright, 2023 it’s his last year’, in 2023 I said, ‘2024 has to be his last year’, I felt like he was running out of guys and his time was coming where you have to pass the torch.

“With this one, if he loses this one, you can truly say the guy might have overstayed his welcome, it’s been a very long time that he’s been doing this, what happens after you fight Terence Crawford?” Porter continued.
