Smriti Mandhana got the social media world rocking with her sensational, record-breaking century against Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday (September 20). The left-hander smashed 125 runs off just 63 balls, laced with 17 boundaries and five maximums with a strike-rate of 198.41.
She reached her century in just 50 deliveries, the fastest for India in the format, for men or women. It was her 13th ton and perhaps the best ever, considering the quality of the world-beating Australian attack.
The situation demanded nothing less. The visitors put up a huge 412/10, without even reaching the quota of their 50 overs, which was their joint-highest score in the format, and much, much more than India has ever successfully chased. It was another show of why Mandhana, still just 29, is one of India’s best-ever batters with the potential to be the greatest in ODIs. That’s exactly what many fans saw in her — greatness.
One Australian fan wrote: “You have to take moment and applause greatness when you see one. Smriti Mandhana, take a bow, take an arrow, hit it with me if you want to, but this was beyond excellent. Sensational batting. #INDvAUS”
Another user said: “This is Smriti Mandhana’s world, we are just living it.”
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta also chimed in: “Has to be one of the craziest chases. Smriti Mandhana at her destructive best and now Harmanpreet also finding her mojo. Delhi crowds treated to something absolutely special. #INDWvsAUSW”

Mandhana has quickly become India’s rock in the format. Her extraordinary form — she also scored a century in the last game — bodes well for the Women in Blue ahead of the 2025 World Cup at home.
However, it also lays bare again the team’s extra dependence on her. Better contributions from the lower order to take the team home in the ongoing huge chase would change that, too.
