“Preparing without taking reps is a challenge,” the QB told Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer postgame. “My most recent game wasn’t too long ago. The way the NFL works is preparing the starting quarterback to be ready. If you get to Sunday, and you aren’t prepared…”
Then you can cost your team a victory. Perhaps Browning will play better in Week 3 at the Minnesota Vikings after a full week of practice as the starter.
Perennial MVP candidate Burrow is the Bengals’ offensive keystone. But a less talented QB can step in and be productive. Cincinnati features wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, who combined for 17 receptions, 221 yards and two TD catches against Jacksonville.
Browning still didn’t prove he could save the Bengals’ playoff hopes in Week 2. They need him to play like a high-level starter. If he can’t, Cincinnati should trade for another QB, perhaps Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons or Jameis Winston of the New York Giants.
