Cambridge plant-based café to close after five years

A plant-based café in Cambridge has announced that it is closing after five years. Thrive cafe in Norfolk Street was opened by Darren Green in 2020.

In July of this year, the café celebrated its five-year a nniversary. However, it announced on social media yesterday (Tuesday, September 23) that it would be closing.

In a post to its followers, a café spokesperson said it was with a “heavy heart” that they were making the announcement. The post said: “It’s with a very heavy heart that after five years of trading through one of the toughest economic climates, we’ve had to face the difficult reality that Thrive is unfortunately not a financially sustainable enterprise.

“We’ve tried many things to keep going, but rising costs and long-term challenges mean we’ve had to come to the very sad conclusion that it’s time to close this chapter.

“Both owners and staff are saddened to lose a business that has felt like home to many of us, and we are endlessly proud of what Thrive has been. We opened in the middle of a pandemic, built a safe and welcoming space for everyone, and created a beautiful community.

“None of this would have been possible without our amazing team and customers. You truly are the best, and we’re so grateful for your support, kindness, and loyalty over the years.

“Thank you for being part of this journey with us. While it’s the end of Thrive as a business, the community we’ve built together will always be something to celebrate.”

The post added that the café will remain open throughout October, but close on Tuesdays. In November it will then open on weekends for events it already has planned. Its menu will be reduced and the last day of trading will be November 30.
