A hairstylist in Cambridge has said they want to be able to sell cocktails to clients getting their hair done, as part of offering them a “premium” experience. Morresi Hairstylist, in King Street, has applied to Cambridge City Council for a licence to sell alcohol to customers between 9am and 7pm on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and between 9am and 9pm on a Thursday.
However, concern has been raised that serving alcohol to customers five days a week could be “excessive”. No objections to the proposed licence have been made by police or environmental health officers, but one objection has been lodged by a member of the public.
They said: “I have heard of hairdressing establishments serving alcohol around special occasions such as Christmas, but to have it available five days per week everyday the salon is open, and from 9am until 7pm or 9pm, sounds excessive to me.”
In the licence application the business said its staff would receive extra training on the sale of alcohol and that a Challenge 25 policy would be in place, with clear signage put up and an incident log kept. The business added in the application that they would prevent any overconsumption of alcohol.
Salvatore Morresi said: “We are a hair salon and the alcohol will be served exclusively to clients during their appointment. It is not intended for takeaway or off-site consumption. We have a small bar area within the salon and plan to offer a very limited selection of drinks, up to three cocktails, which are listed on our in-salon menu.
“The offering is designed to enhance the client experience and create a more relaxed, premium atmosphere while receiving hair and beauty services. Alcohol will only be available during our standard opening hours and exclusively as part of the salon service.
“It will be served responsibly by trained staff, and we will ensure that it is only provided to clients over the age of 18.”
Due to the objection being lodged, a hearing is due to be held later this month (Monday, September 29) where councillors will consider the licence application and decide whether to grant it or not.
