Call for change after skier’s death in training crash

Italian skier Matteo Franzoso has died, aged 25, following a pre-season training crash in Chile last weekend.

Franzoso suffered a major head injury after colliding with fencing at the La Parva track and was placed in a medically induced coma before succumbing to his injuries.

The Italian winter sports federation (FISI) confirmed his death, with president Flavio Roda expressing profound sadness and calling for measures to prevent similar deaths.

A member of Italy’s World Cup squad, Franzoso made 17 World Cup appearances and won the Italian national title in alpine combined in 2023.

Both the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and Olympic gold medallist Lindsey Vonn extended their condolences following the news.
