BYD has released a teaser image of its first all-electric K-Car on its Japanese website, set to make its debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show at the end of the month. From the side profile teaser, the new vehicle adopts the box-shaped design common among Japanese “kei cars.” The model is expected to be primarily sold in the Japanese market, with no confirmation yet on whether it will be introduced to other markets, including China. Compared to other box-shaped cars, BYD’s new vehicle appears to offer more spacious seating. As an electric vehicle, it features a shorter front end and utilises a long wheelbase with short overhangs to maximise interior space. According to previous spy photos, the new car incorporates sliding rear doors for easier entry and exit. The design ensures the rear wheel positioning doesn’t compromise the rear doors. The vehicle also offers good visibility with large windows and a floating roof design. Both the front and rear of the car feature ring-shaped light designs. The interior includes a three-spoke steering wheel with heating functionality. The dashboard is equipped with a digital instrument cluster and a floating central control screen. The A-pillar features a triangular window, and the entire front seating area appears to have a connected design. In terms of power, due to the vehicle’s lightweight construction, the new car is expected to be equipped with a 20 kWh Blade Battery, capable of achieving a range of 180 km under WLTC conditions. When calculated using the traditional CLTC standard, this range would be sufficient for daily urban commuting. According to BYD Auto Japan, this K-Car prototype represents BYD’s first overseas-exclusive design that complies with Japan’s compact car regulations. It embodies BYD’s corporate philosophy of “reducing Earth’s temperature by 1°C” and showcases the company’s latest battery technology and manufacturing capabilities.
