BVA Slams Refereeing in Bronze Medal Loss to Panama

BVA Slams Refereeing in Bronze Medal Loss to Panama The Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) has voiced strong disappointment over what it calls a “grave injustice” during the bronze medal match between Belize and Panama at the 2025 Central American Games in Guatemala. In a statement issued on October 23, the BVA criticised head referee Tatiana Villalobos of Costa Rica for a controversial call. The controversy came in the fifth set. With Panama leading 13–12, a “ball out” call went against Belize, despite what the BVA says was clear evidence that the ball touched a Panamanian player. Yet the point was awarded to Panama, giving them match point. Belize’s team captain reportedly requested clarification, but the referee declined to consult with other officials. Moments later, a red card was issued to a Belizean player for an emotional reaction, handing Panama the final point and the bronze medal. No one from the team wanted to talk upon returning home, visibly disappointed after a long trip. However, members of the women’s team spoke on their behalf, expressing solidarity and frustration over the outcome. “The BVA views this as a grave injustice that not only affected the outcome of the match but also undermined the spirit of fair play that is fundamental to our sport,” the statement read. “Referees are expected to exercise composure, sound judgement, and teamwork, especially in moments of high pressure.” The association is now submitting a formal complaint to AFECAVOL, NORCECA, and FIVB, urging a full investigation and calling for safeguards to prevent similar incidents in future competitions. While acknowledging that the result cannot be changed, the BVA expressed full support for the national team. “We stand firmly by our athletes, who represented Belize with integrity, passion, and professionalism throughout the tournament,” the statement concluded.
