Business Notes: Strangeways Brewing closing Williamsburg location after three years

After three years in business, Strangeways Brewing announced Friday that it plans to permanently close its Williamsburg location in the Shops at High Street, along with a location in Richmond. The last day of operation will be Nov. 22. The brewery, which currently has four establishments, shared in a social media post that moving forward it will be focusing on its locations in Richmond’s Scott Addition and in Fredericksburg. “As we concentrate and continue our efforts at each of these two locales, we in turn will be winding down our operations at the Richmond-Dabney Road and Williamsburg locations,” the post read in part. The Dabney Road storefront was the first location that opened back in 2013. The brewery announced plans to expand to Williamsburg in 2022. At the time, owner Neil Burton, a native of Williamsburg, said he was “beyond thrilled to bring this passion of brewing back to my early roots in Williamsburg, and to do so in what we feel is a truly unique tasting room experience. We too are very excited to join the already prolific craft beer scene Williamsburg has to offer, and one in which there is great camaraderie amongst us all.” The Williamsburg location operates from a 4,000-square-foot space at 1430 High St. that had previously been the clothing store Pendleton. The brewery specializes in a variety of beer, cider, flavored spiked sparkling seltzer and wine. “Our tasting rooms are wonderful gathering places for our community, where countless drafts are poured, stories and laughter are shared and memories made. We can’t begin to express our gratitude to our team who brought these locations to life, and to all of our customers who have helped make these locations special,” the post concluded.
