FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are in the last eight of the FDH Bank Cup following a 3-0 victory against Southern Region Premier Division side, The Boyz FC, at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.
Bullets first scored on the 41st minute as Peter Banda took a short corner passing it to Chikumbutso Salima who then crossed it to Blessings Mpokera, who slotted it home.
Two minutes later, Salima exchanged passes in quick succession with Paul Master, Wongani Lungu and Peter Banda only for Mike Mkwate to score with a tap-in.
The third goal saw Banda again being involved in action as he sent a throughball to Salima who dribbled past through The Boyz goalkeeper, Muhammad Liwewe, to make it three-nil.
Initially, The Boyz started the game with a defensive approach.
Bullets, on the other hand, were in control but failed to crack their opponent’s defence up until the 41st minute.
In the second half, Bullets Coach, Peter Mponda, introduced attacking players in search of more goals. Babatunde Adepoju, Yankho Singo and Aaron Chilipa were in for Paul Master, Hassan Kajoke and Blessings Mpokera.
Adepoju’s introduction was effective, but he was not clinical because he missed his first chance on the 54th minute by heading wide the upright from a Salima’s cross.
The majority of the match saw Bullets squander chances of scoring, with little to none from The Boyz’ side.
Assistant Coach for Bullets, Gilbert Chirwa, said they worked so hard to beat their opponents.
“I told the boys to keep the ball and the bus (high-defensive line) that they (The Boyz) constructed, we managed to get through,” Chirwa said.
Coach for The Boyz, Harry Nyirenda, said he choose a 4-5-1 formation but fatigue caught up to his players, hence the defeat.
“However, we have learnt a lot from this game and this will be very beneficial in our league,” he said.
At Aubrey Dimba Stadium in Mchinji District, Creck Sporting Club also made it to the last 8 as they defeated their fellow top-flight team, Moyale Barracks, 2-1.
This is their first time to reach such a milestone.
Their goals came from Patrick Mupanzi on the 38th and Frank Phiri on the 55th minute.
Moyale found their consolation from Charles Nkhoma’s 83rd minute penalty kick.
The tournament continues on Sunday as Red Lions takes on Civil Service United and Bangwe All Stars faces Kamuzu Barracks.
