ReutersRepresentational image India’s demand for copper has touched 1878 kilotonnes (kt), a 9.3% y-o-y growth, driven by large-scale projects, spanning building and construction, clean energy transition and emerging technologies, according to the “annual copper demand” report for FY25 by the International Copper Association of India.The report highlights the growth of sectors that are the primary drivers of copper demand in India, with building construction and infrastructure segments registering 11% and 17% y-o-y growth, respectively.It also points out that the renewable energy sector has recorded the highest annual capacity additions in the previous fiscal, while “consumer durables sector saw a 19% increase, driven by strong sales of air conditioners, fans, refrigerators and washing machines.”“Policies aimed at promoting renewable energy, sustainable mobility, and infrastructure development have fuelled copper demand, emphasizing its role as a critical resource for the nation’s growth,” said Mayur Karmarkar, Managing Director, International Copper Association India.Karmarkar also said that India needs to build copper reserves to strengthen domestic supply chains “ to ensure future growth and resilience.”Live EventsSecondary (direct melt) copper’s share in copper production increased by 19%, meeting 42% of total copper demand in FY25, up from 38.4% in FY24.“India generated 504 kt of end-of-life and process copper and alloy scrap, further supported by 214 kt of imported copper and alloy scrap in FY2025, reflecting the sector’s growing emphasis on circular economy principles,” stated the report.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
