Today (September 27, 2025), Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch BSNL’s 4G network across the country. This 4G network will be rolled out at approximately 98,000 sites. Notably, BSNL’s 4G network has been developed entirely using indigenous technology. This means that India will now join the select group of five countries in the world that can develop and supply their own 4G-related software and hardware. With the launch of this service, all telecom operators in India will have access to 4G networks, while companies like Jio, Airtel, and Vi are already providing 4G and 5G services to their customers.
India joins this exclusive list of countries
BSNL plans to roll out its 4G network across 98,000 sites nationwide. With this launch, India has now joined the list of countries that develop their own telecom software and hardware. Until now, this list included countries like Sweden, Denmark, China, and South Korea. The launch of BSNL’s 4G network will not only strengthen digital connectivity in the country but also showcase India’s technological capabilities on a global scale. BSNL officials have also indicated that 5G services will be launched soon in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
Jyotiraditya Scindia posts on social media
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia posted on his social media handle, X (formerly Twitter), writing: “A historic leap in India’s telecom journey! Tomorrow, on the occasion of BSNL’s 25th anniversary, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will unveil two landmark initiatives that will shape India’s digital future. He wrote that BSNL will roll out its indigenously developed 4G stack across 98,000 sites nationwide. The launch of India’s 100% 4G network through the Digital India Fund will ensure that no corner of our country is left behind with BSNL 4G, as we all work together to build a truly connected and empowered India.”
This company played a key role in the rollout
Indian companies have made a significant contribution to the BSNL 4G network. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) played a crucial role in designing and integrating the network. The radio access network was developed by Tejas Networks. The entire system was integrated by TCS. This example demonstrates that India is moving towards becoming self-reliant in the telecom sector.
Upgrade to 5G possible
While BSNL lagged behind private telecom companies in launching 4G services, it could be a strong competitor in 5G. According to reports, BSNL’s 4G network is designed in such a way that it can be easily upgraded to 5G. The company is likely to launch its 5G services in Delhi and Mumbai by the end of this year. The 4G rollout is expected to benefit BSNL’s more than 90 million wireless subscribers. Furthermore, users who left BSNL due to network and internet connectivity issues may return, as the government-owned company’s recharge plans are more affordable and cheaper than those of private operators.
