Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming admits she 'contemplated DIVORCE' over his personality changes amid dementia battle

Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming has admitted that she ‘contemplated divorcing’ the star over personality changes amid his health battle.

Heming, 47, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Podcast to candidly discuss the strain in their relationship prior to the actor’s official frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis in 2023.

The mom-of-two explained that some of the first symptoms of the devastating disease included changes in his language – including a stutter – and personality.

She admitted that these left her feeling as though she was no longer aligned with her husband of 16 years but said she could not work out why.

‘Conversations we had, he wasn’t recalling,’ the former model shared in her conversation with Oprah. ‘Our values just didn’t seem to be matching anymore.’

‘Did you ever think about divorce?’ Winfrey asked, with Heming saying she ‘100 percent’ thought about walking away.

‘Because I just didn’t understand how our relationship… We were so connected, so enmeshed, and yet all of a sudden, things just started falling apart,’ she admitted.

Heming, who shares two daughters with Willis, 70, confessed she was initially ‘annoyed’ with her husband.

‘I didn’t understand the conversations we were having,’ she said, anguished. ‘We just weren’t aligned and I didn’t know why. And he wasn’t raising his hand about anything and I did contemplate divorce.’

The former model then revealed the symptoms had been present for ‘a couple of years.’

Heming knew deep down ‘something wasn’t right,’ and ultimately decided to seek medical advice.

‘I knew it was time. I needed to raise my hand and try and be the best advocate I could for my husband and speak to my doctor,’ she told the former talk show host.

She added it wasn’t easy getting her husband to seek help, and took a ‘lot of smoke and mirrors’, but he eventually agreed.

Sadly, the tests showed that Willis’ brain was ‘changing.’

Heming previously told People that ‘early on, life felt very dark, very one-note of just grief and sadness’ after Willis’ diagnosis.

However, she said now she has a different connection with her husband, adding: ‘I feel like our love story has only grown and developed more.’

‘It sounds woo-woo but it’s just on a more cellular level. I am so grateful that he is very much here, very much a part of our day-to-day,’ she gushed.

As the dynamic has shifted in their relationship, she has also changed her perspective and is enjoying the little moments together.

‘It has meant so much to be able to meet him where he’s at, to enjoy this time with him,’ she explained.

Willis famously withdrew from Hollywood in 2022 after developing the brain condition aphasia, which causes a patient’s language abilities to deteriorate.

In 2023, his family announced that his illness had ‘progressed’ and he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Heming recently revealed that the ‘hardest decision’ she took while looking after him was moving him into a separate one-story house away from their primary residence.

He lives there with a full-time care team, while his wife brings their daughters Mabel and Evelyn to visit him ‘a lot,’ including for breakfast and dinner.

‘Bruce would want that for our daughters,’ said Heming. ‘He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.’

The couple made the revelation during a joint ABC special with Diane Sawyer entitled Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey.

Willis’ blended family has rallied around him amid his illness, including his ex-wife Demi Moore and their daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31.

FTD does not cause memory loss at first, but rather initially attacks the parts of the brain in charge of language and personality.
