The Cleveland Browns went into Week 1 with rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders listed as inactive and as the emergency quarterback. Moreover, all signs point to the Browns not using Sanders this season unless injuries occur to both Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel.Sanders was listed as QB3 on the depth chart after the Browns traded Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders. In turn, Cleveland radio host Tony Rizzo called on the Browns to “let him go” after seeing how they handled the situation leading up to the start of the season.”If you’re not going to give Shedeur a chance, let him go. Let him go. Are they just keeping him around for SportsCenter hits, and Stephen A. show, and jersey sales? Or are they going to give this kid a chance to play?” Rizzo said at the end of August. On Thursday, Rizzo was at it again after hearing reports that Sanders isn’t even running the scout team.”I’m hearing Shedeur isn’t even running scout team, he’s literally watching everyone play. Bailey Zappe’s running scout team, that’s what I’m hearing,” Rizzo said during The Tony Rizzo Show. “Why is he on the team? Why is he here? Because his jersey is selling?””Why is he on the team if he’s not even running scout team?” Rizzo continued.More NFL: Colts GM Makes Decisive Anthony Richardson Statement Amid Trade RumorsAfter Pickett was traded, the Browns signed Bailey Zappe to the practice squad, and the journeyman spent part of the 2024 season with Cleveland, and has familiarity with the offense.Still, Rizzo is puzzled by the Browns reportedly using Zappe as the scout team quarterback instead of Sanders. On the other hand, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported Sanders won’t play unless things get “really weird.”As of now, it seems the Browns are going with that plan, and it will be interesting to see what head coach Kevin Stefanski or offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has to say about that situation. For more on the Cleveland Browns and general NFL news, head to Newsweek Sports
