Brock Purdy is a Thorn in the Indianapolis Colts' Side

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, New York Giants fans. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones is only on a one-year contract, but he’s playing very well and is going to want a new one for a lot more money. Does he have the Colts bent over a barrel? He might. NFL insider Ryan Wilson talked about how the Giants gave Jones a four-year, $160 million contract following the 2022 season when he won a playoff game after years of dysfunction. “I mentioned that because I would imagine on this next deal, the Colts are reportedly interested in signing him to a multi-year deal, you’re going to have to pay him more than $40 million,” Wilson said. Daniel Jones could ask for Brock Purdy money There was a lot of discussion about the value of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy this offseason. He always seemed to play well and win, but many speculated that he was a quarterback in an incubator and needed a lot of help around him. Well, the 49ers opened up the checkbook and broke the bank on Purdy with a five-year, $265 million deal that averages $53 million per year. I thought that was a lot even before this injury-riddled season happened. The 49ers have played eight games this season and Mac Jones has started or played in six of them. Purdy has missed the last four games with a sore big toe and San Fran is still 5-3. Of course the Niners’ brass is currently wondering if they really needed to pay all of this money to a guy who was never a superstar to begin with. While Purdy has been better than Jones so far in his career, you could put them in the same bin. League observers think the Colts want Daniel Jones back Former Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon said that the Colts definitely want Jones to stay, but he’d have to understand that he’s not getting Purdy money. Purdy is currently making sure that the Colts won’t give Jones Purdy money. “You absolutely want him back,” Carthon said. “I think it’s smart to try to get this deal done now… the franchise tag will be the floor. However, because you mentioned the Brock Purdy deal, it’s not going to touch that deal. I don’t think it’s going to come close… he’s going to come in at a team-friendly deal that’s market appropriate. Not crushing the market, but fair.” And that would make sense. Sam Darnold didn’t break the bank with the Seattle Seahawks when he got a three-year, $100.5 million deal this offseason. It’s a lot of money for a guy who has bounced around the league (see: Daniel Jones) with some ups and some downs. And maybe Jones has established himself as a bridge, similar to what Darnold has done. Jones should get paid, but it’s tough to see the Colts treating him like the guy of the future. “If you aren’t in position to draft and develop a guy, it makes a lot of sense to try one of these bridge options if you trust your system and roster.” one front-office source told Sehaj Kour of Essentially Sports. I’d guess that Jones’ next contract (assuming he continues to play well and doesn’t fall off of a cliff, let’s not leave out that scenario) will be much more Darnold than Purdy.
