British-born Sikh woman whose attackers shouted 'you don't belong here' assaulted and raped in Oldbury during racially-motivated attack

A British-born Sikh woman in her 20s was sexually assaulted, raped and brutally beaten in a horrific attack on Tuesday morning (September 9) shortly before 8.30am.

During the attack, the perpetrators shouted at her: “you don’t belong in this country, get out.”

The attackers are described as being white, one with a shaved head, heavy build, and was reported to be wearing a dark coloured sweatshirt and had gloves on, while the second man was reportedly wearing a grey top with a silver zip.

Sikh Youth UK has met and is supporting the victim and her family, while West Midlands Police say they are ‘working really hard’ to identify those responsible.

This serious attack follows the recent attack on two elderly Sikh taxi drivers in Wolverhampton, an investigation that is currently ongoing.

Sikh Youth UK has also alerted the wider community to remain vigilant, ensure family members are safe and strengthen safeguarding measures in daily routines.

Dabinderjit Singh OBE, the Lead Executive for Political Engagement at the Sikh Federation (UK) said: “The attack took place in broad daylight on a busy road where the local MP has his office.

“We have reached out to Gurinder Singh Josan, the MP for Smethwick, to take urgent action, but have not yet had a response.

“Politicians from all political parties should have zero tolerance for all violent racist attacks.

“The current racist political environment is driven by popularism and created by politicians playing the “anti-immigration card’ who are unashamedly exploiting those with right-wing and racist views.

“More than 48 hours later we await the public condemnation by politicians on all sides of this brutal racist and sexual attack where a young Sikh woman has been viciously beaten and raped.”

Ch Supt Kim Madill, of Sandwell Police, said: “We are working really hard to identify those responsible, with CCTV, forensic and other enquiries well under way.

“We fully understand the anger and worry that this has caused, and I am speaking to people in the community today to reassure them that we are doing everything we can to identify and arrest those responsible.

“Incidents like this are incredibly rare, but people can expect to see extra patrols in the area.”
