A British holidaymaker has tragically died after coming off his bike on a cycling trip in Spain. The 57-year-old tourist, who has not been named, is said to have “passed out” while he was cycling on the N-340 road on the outskirts of the resort town of Almunecar in the province of Granada. Almuñecar is a popular town among tourists, known as a popular destination on the Costa Tropical for both beach and nature tourism. The tragic incident happened at around 12.30pm on Thursday November 6. Emergency services rushed to the scene but the cyclist was sadly pronounced dead at the scene following unsuccessful attempts by local police to revive him. Witnesses told emergency responders the cyclist had fallen off his bike before it emerged the incident was probably linked to a health problem he had suffered while he was practicing sport. The Civil Guard are now awaiting the results of an autopsy before determining their next move, although there is nothing at this stage to suggest the death is crime-related. Local reports described the other cyclists as friends who had been out cycling with him along Spain ‘s southern coastline. The attempts to revive him before he was pronounced dead are said to have lasted for around half an hour, with police using a defibrillator as part of their efforts to save him. Almunecar’s Security Councillor Mari Carmen Martin Orce said afterwards she profoundly regretted what had happened and offered her condolences to the dead man’s friends and family. The spot where the tragedy happened is between a restaurant called Mateano Restaurant and a hotel called Hotel California.
