Bridgeton youth coach indicted in 3rd sexual assault case

A youth sports coach already accused of sexually assaulting two teens has been indicted in a third case in Cumberland County. Robert R. “Ronnie” Marino, 75, of Bridgeton, was indicted last year on charges that he sexually assaulted a teen in 2023 and another in the 1990s. Now, another victim claims Marino assaulted him in the 1990s. The cases from the 1990s both involve young athletes Marino was coaching, prosecutors said. But the sport was not identified. Marino’s attorney did not respond to a request to comment on the latest charges. In the 2023 incident, Marino is accused of showing a 16-year-old pornography on a tablet computer and giving him alcohol at the defendant’s home, according to court documents. The teen fell asleep and awoke to Marino sexually assaulting him, police said. The teen confronted Marino about the incident the next day and recorded their conversation, police said. In the recording, Marino admitted his actions and apologized, according to the complaint. Marino told police that he showed the teen pornography and said they each had a shot of whiskey, authorities said. Marino said he didn’t remember assaulting the boy, but stated he would “take the blame for it,” authorities said. That incident did not involve his coaching duties, police said. A month after he was charged, a second person came forward to say Marino sexually assaulted him in the 1990s when he was between age 14 and 17 and Marino was his coach, authorities said. Those alleged offenses occurred between 1994 and 1998 in Bridgeton, according to court records. A Cumberland County grand jury indicted Marino in those cases in January 2024. In June of this year, a third person came forward to claim Marino sexually assaulted him dozens of times in the 1990s while he was the victim’s coach, according to Cumberland County Assistant Prosecutor Caitlin Flynn. The alleged said he was between 12 and 16 years old when Marino sexually assaulted him 30 to 40 times, Flynn said. Marino would pick up the victim, take him to various sports games and often provide alcohol, the prosecutor said in June after charges were filed in the case. After games, Marino would take him to get food, then go to the coach’s residence. There, Marino would provide more alcohol and show the victim pornography on TV before sexually assaulting him, the prosecutor said. Marino would then take the victim home in the late evening or early morning when his parents were asleep, Flynn said. In September, a grand jury handed down a superseding, eight-count indictment covering all three cases. Marino is charged with two first-degree counts of aggravated sexual assault, four second-degree counts of sexual assault and two third-degree counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He remains free pending resolution of his court cases. During the June detention hearing, defense attorney Richard Klineburger III said his client suffered from ongoing health issues that could not be addressed in jail. At the time, he described turning over 800 pages of medical documents on Marino to the prosecution. Marino is scheduled to return to court Nov. 17 for a post-indictment arraignment hearing.
