With Georgia Tech 7-1 and firmly in the College Football Playoff race, Brent Key’s name is one that is beginning to be linked to openings at a number of schools, including Auburn. The Yellow Jackets head man seemed adamant on Thursday that he wasn’t interested in leaving his alma mater, however. To that end, Key — a Birmingham native and former Alabama offensive line coach — made a rather colorful analogy to indicate he’s in it for the long haul at Georgia Tech. “Since I came back here, since I was named the head coach here, outside of the time with my family, every waking second of my life has gone towards building this program, to get to the point that it is right now,” Key said, via Kelly Quinlan of On3 Sports. “So that in turn we can continue three years from now, five years from now, 10 years from now, continue to elevate this place to be in the that conversation. “Not to be in there for two or three weeks, but to be a consistent team, not when you lose one game, have people say the story book is over. Nah, it is just beginning. Slice me open and see what colors I bleed.” After graduating from Hewitt-Trussville High School, the 47-year-old Key played guard at Georgia Tech from 1997-2000 before going into coaching. He worked for former Yellow Jackets head coach George O’Leary at Central Florida from 2005-15, then was hired as Nick Saban’s offensive line coach at Alabama. Key helped the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 2017 and three straight title-game appearances before joining Geoff Collins’ Georgia Tech staff in 2019. He took over as interim coach when Collins was fired in 2022, and was elevated to the position permanently the following year.
