Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz set to return for a new Mummy sequel

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the stars of the Mummy film series, are reportedly reuniting to return for a sequel in Universal’s iconic The Mummy franchise. This film trilogy began in 1999 with the first film The Mummy, which was followed by The Mummy Returns (2001), and lastly the third one, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).The new film is reported to be a sequel that will effectively disregard the events of the 2008 chapter. Directed by the Radio Silence team, this sequel aims to revitalize the franchise, which has, to date, consisted of three main films starring Brendan Fraser, alongside the 2017 reboot. The sequel will mark Rachel Weisz's first time returning to the character since 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Meanwhile, Fraser’s last appearance in the primary series was in the third film, 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Legacy adventure lives on: The Mummy sequel brings back Brendan Fraser & Rachel WeiszA still from the film (Image via Prime Video)Best known for 2019’s Ready or Not and for successfully reviving the Scream franchise for Paramount in 2022, filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who work under the collective name Radio Silence, are now set to direct the fourth installment in the decades-old action franchise, which will feature Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, possibly reprising their previous roles in the film series. The action-adventure franchise began its modern run with 1999’s The Mummy, a film both directed and co-written by Stephen Sommers. It proved to be a global phenomenon, mainly due to the chemistry between its lead stars, Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan. The film was a huge box office hit, quickly followed by the equally successful sequel, 2001’s The Mummy Returns, with the first two installments each grossing over $400 million worldwide. However, the third entry in the franchise, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), received a poor reception, mainly because Weisz stepped down from her role.Later, Brendan Fraser stepped away from major roles in Hollywood due to several personal issues, which included chronic health problems, and a highly publicized assault allegation he leveled against former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk. He received a major comeback featuring in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale (2022), for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor. His upcoming project with Weisz is rooted in the original creative lineage, with franchise veteran Sean Daniel returning as producer. Project X Entertainment’s producing trio, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein are set to join Daniel for the sequel. The sequel's release date, synopsis and other information are yet to be revealed.Stay tuned for more updates.
