Blackburn Rovers’ Championship encounter against Ipswich Town at Ewood Park has been abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.
Both sets of players were taken off the pitch by the referee in the 80th minute of the Championship game on Saturday, with the hosts leading 1-0.
Blackburn previously posted on X about the game’s suspension, saying: “The ref has called the game to a stop and brought all the players off the pitch due to the wet pitch.”
Over 20 minutes later, the decision was eventually made to call off the game, Blackburn added a further statement, saying: “Match abandoned: #Rovers 1-0 #itfc. Due to a waterlogged pitch, the referee has called off the contest.”
A further statement from the former Premier League champions clarified: “A decision on whether the fixture will be replayed in full will be made by the EFL Board in due course.”
Meanwhile Ipswich posted a thankful message to their travelling support, writing on X: “The players are out thanking the travelling fans. Just shy of 4,000 supporters for over a 500-mile round trip. Rough day.”
Blackburn had broken the deadlock on the hour mark through a Todd Cantwell penalty and had a man advantage, with Ipswich down to 10 men following Jacob Greaves’ red card in the 49th minute.
The game was paused for over 20 minutes while attempts to clear the water and make the pitch playable were made. However, the match officials decided to abandon the game.
