It’s been a dramatic year for Beyond the Gates character Martin Richardson. After pursuing a presidential candidacy and facing a painful secret from his past that triggered PTSD and strained his marriage, the congressman’s life has been anything but calm. His portrayer, Brandon Claybon, recently caught up with CBS Mornings Plus to discuss Martin’s latest challenges and what’s next for the character. Reflecting on Martin’s political ambitions, Claybon said the congressman still has work to do before aiming for the oval office. “He has ambitions to run for president, but right now he has to worry about reelection in the next few months.” He explained, “I would love him run for the presidency, but we will have to see.” Claybon also emphasized the significance of portraying an interracial romance on daytime television. His character, Martin, is married to Smitty, played by Daytime Emmy winner Mike Manning, “I know representation matters,” he said. “I think this is the first interracial gay couple on daytime tv, so this is historical, not only being on the show Beyond the Gates, but I’m just elated to be here and to be able to represent the LGBTQIA community.” Fan React The story was posted to Instagram where Claybon’s fans and coworkers showed up to support the star. David Lami Friebe, Lauren Buglioli and Colby Natasha Nixon all showed up to share their support with Nixon adding, “I am LOVING this press run!” Fans in the comments echoed this, with one user writing, “Great Interview Brandon!!
