The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosomtwe, Engineer Abdul Hamid, has summoned the chief of Asuoho Konkoma, Nana Oduro Agyei Panin II and the local assembly member Aborakwa Stephen to explain their role in the illegal mining activities that have caused severe environmental destruction near a school and a clinic. The decision follows a field operation led by the DCE on Wednesday (22 October), where authorities halted mining operations taking place dangerously close to the Konkoma D/A Basic School and the local health facility. “The traditional leaders and the assembly member have been invited to provide answers on how such large-scale destruction could occur under their watch,” Engineer Hamid said in a statement. “Accountability will be pursued to the fullest extent.” He disclosed that a formal request had been made to the Ghana Police Service to investigate the illegal activity and arrest those responsible. Reclamation efforts Meanwhile, two excavators have been deployed to reclaim the affected land under police supervision. “We cannot sit back while our environment and public facilities are destroyed. The reclamation work has already begun,” the DCE added. Engineer Hamid also urged residents to report any illegal mining operations in their communities, stressing that protecting the environment and public safety remains his top priority. Authorities say the investigation and reclamation efforts are ongoing, with further updates expected in the coming days. Earlier arrests Meanwhile, National security operatives had earlier arrested eight people and seized four excavators in a joint operation to halt illegal mining activities near a school and a clinic at Asuoho Konkoma in the Bosomtwe District. Captain Kwame Jabari, the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, clarified that the operation was carried out on Friday after reports of widespread environmental destruction in the area. “The operation has already been conducted, and the illegal miners are no longer there,” Captain Jabari told Asaase News. “We apprehended eight individuals and retrieved four excavators, which are currently in the custody of national security.” Asaase Broadcasting Company airs on Asaase 99.5 Accra, Asaase 98.5 Kumasi, Asaase 99.7 Tamale, Asaase 100.3 Cape Coast, AsaasePa 107.3 (Accra).
